📘 Nouns

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.


1️⃣ Types of Nouns

Type Description Examples
Common Nouns General names of things or people dog, city, car
Proper Nouns Specific names (capitalized) London, Sarah, Amazon
Concrete Nouns Things you can see or touch apple, table, music (sound)
Abstract Nouns Ideas, feelings, qualities love, happiness, freedom
Countable Nouns Can be counted book (books), cat (cats)
Uncountable Nouns Cannot be counted water, rice, information

2️⃣ Singular and Plural

  • Singular: names one item
  • Plural: names more than one (usually add -s or -es)

Examples:

  • one cat → two cats
  • one box → three boxes

3️⃣ Possessive Nouns

Show ownership using 's or just ' (for plural nouns ending in s).

Examples:

  • Sarah’s book
  • The dogs’ park (for multiple dogs)

4️⃣ Compound Nouns

Two or more words combined to make one noun.

Examples:

  • toothbrush
  • mother-in-law
  • swimming pool
