📘 Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs are made up of a main verb + one or two particles (prepositions or adverbs) that create a new meaning.


1️⃣ Structure

look up search for information
give up stop trying
take off remove / begin to fly
put on wear
run out of have no more

2️⃣ Examples in Sentences

  • I need to look up the word in the dictionary.
  • She gave up smoking last year.
  • The plane took off at 8 a.m.
  • He put on his jacket because it was cold.
  • We ran out of milk yesterday.

3️⃣ Important Notes

  • Phrasal verbs can be separable or inseparable.
    • Separable: You can put the object between the verb and particle.
      • She turned off the light. / She turned the light off.
    • Inseparable: The object always comes after the particle.
      • We ran into an old friend.
