📘 Possessive 's (Apostrophe + s)

We use 's or just ' to show possession or ownership.


1️⃣ Rules for Using 's

Type Example
Singular noun + 's the girl's bag = the bag of the girl
Plural noun (ends in s) + ' the teachers' room = the room of the teachers
Irregular plural (no s) + 's the children's toys = the toys of the children

2️⃣ Examples in Sentences

  • This is Anna’s phone.
  • That is my brother’s car.
  • The dog’s tail is long.
  • We met at James’s house.
  • The students’ homework is done.
  • The men’s shoes are on sale.

3️⃣ Double Possessive

  • This is John and Mary’s apartment. (shared)
  • This is John’s and Mary’s homework. (separate)

4️⃣ Avoid Confusion

  • This is the leg of the table (not a person → use "of")
    ✅ Correct: the table leg or the leg of the table
    ❌ Wrong: the table’s leg (sounds odd for objects)
