📘 Word Order in Adjectives

When we use more than one adjective to describe a noun, we usually follow a specific order:


🔢 Standard Order of Adjectives:

Order Type of Adjective Example
1 Opinion beautiful, nice, terrible
2 Size big, small, tiny
3 Age old, young, new
4 Shape round, square, thin
5 Color red, blue, green
6 Origin (where from) Turkish, American, Italian
7 Material wooden, plastic, gold
8 Purpose (what it's for) sleeping (bag), cooking (pan)
9 Noun bag, car, dress

🧠 Example Sentence:

a beautiful small old round white Italian wooden coffee table

➡️ Opinion + Size + Age + Shape + Color + Origin + Material + Purpose + Noun

  • a nice big blue car
  • an elegant long red dress
  • a small old wooden chair

⚠️ Tips

  • Usually, we don’t use more than 3 adjectives in everyday speech.
    Too many adjectives can sound unnatural.

  • Commas are not used between adjectives in this kind of order.

✅ Correct: She has a big old brown dog.
❌ Wrong: She has a brown old big dog.
